Glenn Martens Joins Maison Margiela As Creative Director

Jan 30, 2025 | 2 min read

Replacing John Galliano at Maison Margiela is Glenn Martens, the Diesel designer that is all about avant-garde denim

Glenn Martens has been named the new creative director of Maison Margiela, as announced by the OTB Fashion Group, which owns brands such as Diesel, Jil Sander, Marni and Maison Margiela, among others. OTB chairman Renzo Rosso expressed his confidence in Martens, citing his talent and vision, and highlighting the lineage of creative leadership at the house, following Martin Margiela and John Galliano.

“Welcome Glen Martens to the amazing Maison Margiela, the most cutting-edge couture house in the whole world. Now it’s your turn to write the next chapter - an honor and a responsibility, with an incredible team by your side. Make us dream.” Rosso wrote in his recent Instagram post.

Martens, who will continue his role as creative director at Diesel, succeeds John Galliano, who departed Margiela last year.  This appointment follows speculation since Martens' departure from Y/Project in September 2024, where he spent 11 years. The Belgian designer's success at Diesel and his critically acclaimed work at Y/Project positioned him as a leading candidate for the Margiela role. With Y/Project now shuttered, Martens can devote all his energy to Diesel and Maison Margiela.

Martens, like Martin Margiela, studied at the Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Martin Margiela, the House's founder, established a reputation for avant-garde and deconstructivist designs. His influence on fashion remains profound, even after his departure from the brand. Maison Margiela continues to uphold his legacy of pushing boundaries and challenging conventional fashion norms.
