Designed for modern-day women not tied to tradition, Erdem’s new White Collection is fresh, feminine and stunningly empowering
Classic, feminine and utterly versatile, there are several good reasons the white dress reappears season after season. Be it ivory, eggshell, brilliant or magnolia, what may seem intimidating to some is sartorial gold dust to others. A hue that is traditionally bridal, it’s no surprise that white is also the backbone of Erdem’s debut collection of impossibly dreamy ready-to-wear wedding dresses that fashion brides the world over have long been waiting for – the White Collection.“There’s something wonderfully modern about a white dress,” designer Erdem Moralioglu tells MOJEH. “It’s feminine and empowering.”
Comprising six effortless designs, the collection covers everything from embellished cape dresses and embroidered cotton voile midis to simple broderie anglaise gowns that play on the tropes of both romance and tradition. Each was designed for the woman looking for something less formulaic, lighter, and less heavily styled for the big day, and in that lies the collection’s magic – versatility. “I approached the collection in a much more relaxed way, and ultimately I love the idea of these pieces working for a wedding but also across different contexts and settings too,” explains Moralioglu. “Although it’s a white collection, it’s not just for brides… there’s lots of beautiful cotton poplin pieces, perfect for a warmer climate.”
With the pandemic temporarily putting a stop to flamboyant mass gatherings, the White Collection is an edit for the times, with its featherweight organza and outsized satin floral chokers styled so as not to look out of place at a spring garden party or exclusive polo event. After all, an expansive archive has proved a springboard of inspiration for Erdem’s latest, whose 15 years of magical fashion looks gave him much to draw from. And while large-scale weddings are on hold for the foreseeable future, the designer agrees that a woman’s need for a gown is as strong as ever. “I think in some ways women’s needs have changed, but at the same time they have still been buying gowns throughout,” he says. “I think they are hopeful for better times, like we all are.” We’ll toast to that.
