On Tuesday 5 November, Chanel took over Hong Kong with the presentation of its Cruise 2024/25 collection, a compelling fusion of sport, urban flair and the House's iconic nautical references. Originally introduced in Marseille in May, the collection emphasises movement and the energy of everyday life in the Mediterranean, redefining the aesthetic of modern luxury.
The venue—a stark, modern space at the Hong Kong Design Institute in Tseung Kwan O—served as a launchpad for a three-year partnership between Chanel and the institute. This collaboration aims to connect students with the fashion world, providing insights and opportunities that bridge the gap between academia and industry.
As attendees arrived, they were greeted by Modern Flirt, a short film crafted by French director Audrey Diwan, a trusted collaborator of the House. Starring local actress Angela Yuen and French actor Benjamin Voisin, the film set an engaging tone for the evening. Outside, the forecourt transformed into “Radio Chanel,” where emerging artists and established names engaged in frank discussions about creativity and the local art scene.
The night also featured a preview of the Imagine an Elsewhere exhibition, showcasing 16 works by 35 students from various design disciplines, from architecture to fashion. Running from 7 November to 31 December 2024, the exhibition embodies the innovative spirit of Hong Kong's up-and-coming designers.
After the runway show, the festivities moved to Shaw Studios, where guests enjoyed a mix of performances that kept the energy flowing. Angèle and Sébastien Tellier delivered a unique duet, while dancers from (LA)HORDE, the Ballet National de Marseille, brought an unexpected flair to the stage alongside actress Nathalie Hsu. The night also included sets from singer Kalai and DJ Yeti Out, contributing to the eclectic atmosphere.
Among the guests were Chanel ambassadors Penélope Cruz, G-Dragon, Whitney Peak and Caroline de Maigret, mingling with notable figures from Hong Kong’s vibrant cultural scene, including Chow Yun-Fat, Carina Lau and Fala Chen. The event drew a mix of established and emerging talents, reinforcing the idea that fashion is as much about community as it is about design.
In a city known for its dynamic creative scene and cultural diversity, the Chanel Cruise 2024/25 show highlighted the brand's deep connections to Hong Kong. By fostering collaboration and dialogue, Chanel is not merely showcasing its collection but also reaffirming its commitment to the local creative ecosystem. It’s a statement that resonates well beyond the event, positioning the House as a pivotal player in the ongoing narrative of global fashion.
