Walter Chiapponi has been appointed creative director of Blumarine after parting ways with Tod's in July. The Italian designer has worked closely with Miu Miu, Valentino, Gucci and Bottega Veneta throughout his career, before scoring the role of creative director at Tod's in 2019.
“I am delighted to have been appointed Creative Director of an iconic Italian brand that has outlined over time an idea of femininity that is defined by lightness and creativity," shared Chiapponi in a statement. "The possibility of contributing to establishing a new phase for Blumarine is for me an opportunity to embrace new thrilling and important horizons, to expand my vision and to restore sense to artistic expression."
Blumarine acquired legions of Gen-Z customers thanks to its nostalgic Y2K aesthetic and playful attitude, though the butterfly-emblazoned baby tees and low-slung denim are far from Blumarine's traditionally romantic, sensual silhouettes. Walter Chiapponi will present his first collection for Blumarine in February 2024 during Milan Fashion Week. Will he continue the throwback wardrobe of dreams, or will he take Blumarine back to the future? We will have to wait and see.
