The Met Gala - the Oscars of the fashion world - took place last night in New York City to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and it was worth the wait. Although a more intimate affair with a smaller (yet just as fabulous) guest-list, celebrities descended upon the famous Met steps to show their sartorial interpretations of the evening's dress code "American Independence"; a celebration of American fashion in line with the exhibit In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. Looks ranged from more literal interpretations of the theme - Taylor Hill arrived as the Statue of Liberty - to classic creations from American designers and conversation starters. The Met Gala's honorary chairs Anna Wintour, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri and Tom Ford were joined by co-chairs Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka. Tom Ford wore his own creation while Timothée brought his signature eclectic red carpet style, pairing three designers - Haider Ackermann, Rick Owens and Converse - for an all-white ensemble. Billie opted for old-Hollywood glamour in Oscar de la Renta, Amanda Gorman stunned in a crystal-embellished royal-blue Vera Wang number and Naomi Osaka made a statement in Louis Vuitton.
This year's Met Gala guests went all-out for the evening, making up for red-carpet time lost due to the pandemic. A Met Gala like no other, celebrities were obliged to show proof of vaccinations and negative test results before attending; they adhered to social distancing protocols (for the most part) before disappearing inside to enjoy the top-secret evening, leaving us to pick our jaws up off the floor.
