Kuwait-based designer Bazza Alzouman sits down with MOJEH to discuss her FW18 collection. Find out what inspires her.
It's not everyday that designers from our region make it internationally, but Bazza Alzouman is not your average talent. Known for making beautiful wearable pieces for the modern woman, the kuwait-based designer has amassed quite the Arab following. So it was no surprise when Moda Operandi, the only online retailer who invite clients to preorder next-season's looks straight from the runway, announced that it was debuting Alzouman's FW18 line online. MOJEH caught up with the designer to talk about her new collection, what inspires her and why we should all be reading more. Here is what she had to say...
On the book and inspiration behind the collection:
I’m always drawn to juxtaposition and I was really drawn to emerald green and shades of green for this collection – Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was the perfect expression of those things. There was also a movie made in the 90’s based on the book; it had the right sort of imagery and feel for the backdrop of the collection.
On her muse:
It changes from season to season but in general it is someone who I feel is free spirited and really living true to their authentic self, away from the rules and norms that are imposed by the world. They have a sort of charisma and energy that attracts those around them. So it really varies. I like to explore new things so I don’t stick to one muse, especially when it comes to my work.
On her reading habits:
I would love to read more! It’s so distracting in the digital age and it makes reading a little more difficult. I have begun to read again; I mostly enjoy non fiction thought. I can’t remember the last time I read a fiction book.
On her favourite piece from the collection:
It’s so hard to choose. Maybe the Zahra high neck green velvet gown. I love the edginess and luxury of it. I feel it’s the mood that I wanted to capture for this collection. I also love the Camelia black velvet off shoulder dress; It’s so wearable and romantic and it represents the essence of the brand. Velvet was a new material for me this season so I loved the feel of it and how it translated on the dresses.
On her Arab customer:
She’s confident and really aware of fashion but has her own sense of style. She likes to stand out with what she’s wearing and try new things, she’s a little modest, and edgy but always elegant and classy.
On debuting on Modaoperandi:
It’s such an amazing feeling to be on a well respected online luxury retailer next to designers that I have always admired. For Moda to feature the brand is in essence to recognise that there is a viable market for what we offer as a brand and that is such validation and makes all the hard work worthwhile. We hope that this is just the beginning and that we continue to be a part of the Moda family.
