Giorgio Armani pledges a fur-free future for his label, following in the footsteps of fashion giants such as Stella McCartney, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and many more. But what's really going on behind the scenes at sustainable and ethical fashion businesses?

Over the last few years, sustainable fashion has taken the centre stage in the luxury business, with the industry’s most influential players devoting their collections and business models to produce ethically viable clothing and accessories. Stella McCartney positioned herself as a leader in sustainability by banning cruelty-free wool and all animal products from her fashion and beauty lines, including a "Fur Free Fur" range of faux fur coats for pre-fall and autumn/winter 2015.
Following a similar path, luxury labels such as Gucci, Ralph Lauren and most recently Giorgio Armani have jumped aboard the fur-free-fashion train, pledging to incorporate synthetic alternatives to animal skins in upcoming collections. “Pursuing the positive process undertaken long ago, my company is now taking a major step ahead, reflecting our attention to the critical issues of protecting and caring for the environment and animals,” Mr Armani announced in his statement earlier this week.
