While there were plenty of instances of method dressing in the past, 2024 levelled up with over-the-top ensembles that injected red carpets with some much-needed eccentricity. From head-to-toe green looks to full-on tennis-themed outfits, stars channeled their characters off-screen with as much dedication as they did in front of the camera. Here’s a round-up of MOJEH’s favourite hits from this year’s method dressing extravaganza.
Cynthia Erivo For Wicked
Cynthia Erivo’s press tour for Wicked was a lesson in the many shades of green. Playing Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, the star stuck to the verdant hue with a few black ensembles, both in styles that are dramatic and avant-garde. Erivo successfully introduced her character to the audience while making sure her fashion game was on point through film festival and award ceremony appearances that were nothing short of stunning.
Jenna Ortega for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Dressed in a custom Harris Reed with Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice jewellery for the UK premiere of her movie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega made sure her red carpet look was more than just a pretty outfit. The teal and black colour of her peplum dress was inspired by character Delia Deetz’s sculptures in the first movie while her custom Ozias Paris purse is an exact replica of the house featured in the film.
Lady Gaga for Joker: Folie à Deux
At the London premiere of her movie, Joker: Folie à Deux, Lady Gaga took method dressing a step further by introducing makeup into the mix. The singer and actress opted for an elegant red Celine gown while channeling her character, Harley Quinn, with whimsical makeup of vibrant blue eyeshadow and a crystal tear.
Zendaya for Challengers
To see method dressing at its finest, look no further than Zendaya and her stylist, Law Roach. During the press tour for her film Challengers, the duo redefined the boundaries of red carpet fashion. From a custom Thom Browne look featuring embellishments in the shape of tennis rackets to bespoke Loewe heels with tennis balls, every outfit perfectly complemented the film's theme.
Dakota Johnson for Madame Web
There was nothing subtle about Dakota Johnson’s outfit choice for Madame Web’s red carpet premiere in Los Angeles. The star, styled by Kate Young, wore a cobweb-inspired Gucci gown, embodying the literal meaning of her Marvel debut, and a stunning Messika neckpiece to celebrate.
Anya Taylor-Joy For Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Wearing a gold-link dress decorated with arrow-shaped spears, Anya Taylor-Joy joined the method dressing bandwagon during the promotion of her post-apocalyptic film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The Rabanne look featured a matching headpiece elevating the metal-heavy ensemble which had co-stars maintaining an arm’s distance from the actress.
Ariana Grande for Wicked
Along with her co-star Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande graced red carpets looking like her character Glinda from their movie Wicked. Grande dressed in pale pinks throughout the press tour with several storyline references in the many looks. The singer’s custom Thom Browne look came with a basket bag, a direct reference to Dorothy and Toto from the Wizard of Oz.
