The 2023 Met Gala dress code celebrates the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld

The Costume Institute is hosting a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, dedicating the exhibition to the designer’s life and legacy. Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will be curated by Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge and Amanda Harlech, Lagerfeld’s long-time collaborator. Together, they will present 150 looks that encapsulate the designer’s career. To round-out the tribute, the 2023 Met Gala dress code will be “In honour of Karl”.

Aside from Chanel, Lagerfeld designed for Chloé, Balmain, Patou, Fendi and his eponymous brand, giving attendees a wealth of archives and eras to pull from. A less obvious yet equally fabulous option would be to don a design from modern-day Chanel, as Lagerfeld’s legacy lives on as a source of inspiration for creative director Virginie Viard. Will one brave guest come dressed in a black suit and white ponytail? We’ll have to wait until the first Monday in May to find out.
