High Voltage

The obligatory shine of the festive season has made a high voltage return to the runways for autumn/winter. Unpredictable, contemporary and decorated with style, the traditional sequined gown has been revamped to create modernist silhouettes in noteworthy textiles.

Michael Kors’s shimmering gold midi dress ballooned at the shoulders and offered a loose, Victorian aesthetic, whilst Nicolas Ghesquière’s metallic mini for Louis Vuitton showcased a futuristic, intergalactic mood. Lightning bolt hues of purple and burnt orange were seen in sequined embellishments at Rodarte and tassled trimmings at Balmain. Designers at Sonia Rykiel transitioned eveningwear into daywear by pairing a sequined pewter pinafore with a soft, knitted turtleneck; a trend also seen at Loewe with space-age midi dresses layered over wide leg trousers.

As the impactful gowns took centre stage, beauty notes became less vivid; the skin was beautifully bare, with a focus on structure and complexion.
