Legendary French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier has opened his first exhibition in the region: Jean Paul Gaultier From A to Z. The temporary exhibition is on display at the Expo 2020 Dubai France Pavilion, where visitors can explore key pieces from the designer’s 50-year career and learn the inspirations and process behind each piece, including those worn by his legion of adoring celebrity clientele.

A rebellious spirit with a penchant for pushing boundaries – “My eccentricity has become my guide,” he explains – Jean Paul Gaultier has continually challenged societal norms with indulgent collections, leading to some of the most iconic creations in fashion history – he was responsible for Madonna’s conical bra and risqué costumes.

The exhibition was curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot with sustainability considered at every turn from the transportation of the clothing to how it will be dismantled for its departure to Marseille, France. Each of the 30 pieces chosen for the exhibition represent the designer’s values of tolerance, inclusion, commitment and humanity. “The exceptional know-how of his Parisian workshops will be brought to light and celebrated through this first exhibition in the Arabian Peninsula,” explained Thierry-Maxime Loriot in a statement.

In addition to fashion, Jean Paul Gaultier fragrances are arguably the most recognisable in the world; the sultry, bustier-clad silhouette has been a staple on collectors’ shelves since its release in 1993. Open until 31 March. France Pavilion, EXPO 2020. Learn more
