Pastel hues set the romantic tone at Armani Privé, where ornamental motifs, diaphanous dresses, and delicate lace reigned supreme.

Peach fuzz has been declared the colour of 2024 by Pantone. It might not have been a coincidense some of Armani's strongest looks last night came in this shade. In the realm of Haute Couture, trends and Pantone's proclamations may hold little sway, but peach fuzz was chosen not for its trendiness but for its gentle and heartfelt hue, symbolizing the desire to nurture kindness, compassion, and connection, all while cocooning us in a deep sense of coziness as we yearn for a more peaceful future.

It wasn't just peach. The collection suffused with pastel tones, resonated with an air of optimism, a much-needed sentiment in these uncertain times.

The 89-year-old designer called the collection Haute Couture en Jeu. Which he interpreted as an opportunity for him to take some risks. Perhaps it was an embrace of different cultures and the joy with which it transcends boundaries to explore distant worlds, as the show notes indicated.

In a wholly imagined journey from West to East, his opening numbers showcased mastery in the layering of gossamer and jacquard fabrics, and embroideries of colourful oriental motifs. What followed was a seamless blend of extravagance and ethereality, crafting his vision with both slender and voluminous silhouettes. Lace and translucent materials were illuminated by the sparkle of embroidery, and on occasion enhanced by the opulence of jacquard.

For example, evening gowns adorned with delicate lace and tiny crystals shared the stage with billowing creations in ethereal tulle or silk chiffon. One memorable piece was a peach bustier dress, cascading in a whirl of pointy-ruffled layers. Indeed, Armani's masterful touch was evident in his delicate yet adventurous combinations of sheer fabrics, lace, intricate patterns, and crystals within a single outfit.

In the front row, esteemed actresses Glenn Close and Gynweth Paltrow could be seen admiring Armani's separates and ethereal gowns alike. And naturally, Armani has long been a favourite of Hollywood's A-list, having dressed numerous stars for their Oscar-winning moments. Notable mentions include Jessica Chastain at the 2022 Oscars and Renée Zellweger at the 2020 Golden Globes. It is clear that this show will offer an array of choices for this year's nominees, continuing the designer's legacy of red-carpet excellence.
