The formidable support and empowerment we have as Emirati women is limitless. I am proud to belong to a nation with visionary leaders that embrace equality, who not only enable every woman the opportunity to thrive but recognise the pivotal role woman play in the social, economic, and political success of the UAE.

There is often a misconceived narrative that UAE women are supressed and passive, but we have never had to fight for equality. Our country’s fundamental belief, right from our humble beginnings to the thriving and cosmopolitan country we have created, is that men and women are equal partners. UAE women are pioneering leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and drivers of change and our voices resonate into every sphere of society.

What do you love most about the UAE?

I hold so much love and pride for my country. We hold tolerance, generosity, and hospitality as important values which I believe is exemplified throughout our beautiful nation. We are a unified community, with family, kindness, and respect at the core of our culture. We have visionary leaders that not only believe and invest in the future of our country, but they believe and invest in us, ensuring we have a harmonious and safe environment, homes, care for the elderly, and education for all. Progress depends on how much people love their country, and when I look at how much we have achieved as a nation in just over 50 years, I feel so proud to call this amazing country my home.

She has raised me with unconditional love and gave me and my siblings the gift of ambition and empathy and instilled determination into us from her own experiences in life, and constantly teaches us to never curb our aspirations or compromise on our dreams and potential. I am privileged to be surrounded by incredibly strong and inspirational women in my family, that inspire me every day with their fierce work ethic, prowess, and spirited devotion.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

“Everything will work out in the end!” Life only exists in the present moment, let go and enjoy it. You can’t change the past and the future isn’t here yet, and therefore not in your control. This is a powerful reminder to have trust and faith that things will ultimately work out for the best.

Emirati Women’s Day has been celebrated since 2015. How would you like to see it progress into the future?

How do you hope to inspire future generations of women in the UAE and beyond?

I hope to inspire them through my journey and determination. With having a “normal” sports background, then going from an amateur to an elite athlete, I never believed in the cliché term “impossible.” I like to debunk myths people convinced themselves on. This is where perception changes and belief walks in; and that’s all you need to do anything, frankly. So throughout my journey I make sure to stay real and open about everything: the hardships, the wins, the anxiety that creeps up, and the truth of it all. I hope my raw journey inspires all those that wished for something or feel lost to build the life that no longer holds dreams, but holds goals.

How do you feel empowered as an Emirati woman?

I feel empowered as an Emirati woman to live my dreams and to accomplish them. Emirati women today have proved themselves with their hard work. The UAE is fortunate to have a great leadership that supports our growth. We are truly lucky in this respect.

Which Emirati women inspire you?

Mariam al Mansoori, the first fighter pilot, inspires me because she broke a mould and entered a field which was viewed as a male-dominant field. And I believe we Emirati women should all look at one another as role models – whether they are working or mothers – as we all bring something for the other to learn from and help elevate one another. We shouldn’t compete, but rather lift each other up.

How do you hope to inspire future generations of women in the UAE and beyond?

I would advise all young girls to never restrict their potential; explore diverse interests and avoid blindly following trends. Pursue careers that genuinely ignite your passion. Remember, challenges are valuable learning experiences that can propel your growth. Instead of waiting for opportunities, proactively work hard and map out a clear plan to guide your journey towards them.

It means that we can celebrate all other Emirati women and myself for all the accomplishments we have achieved so far. There are so many Emirati women out there that have accomplished more than I have, and I am proud of every one of them. I am proud to come from a country where women have excelled in every field. Emirati women are determined and consistently breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, especially when it comes to pursuing their goals and dreams.

Roll DXB is the first concept of its kind in the region. What were the challenges of founding an original concept and how did you overcome them?

In 2021, after many years of roller-skating around the streets of Dubai and being an instrumental part of this fast-growing community, I launched RollDXB with my sister Reem. RollDXB is the region’s first and only indoor roller-skating disco venue, which became an instant business success and continues to go from strength to strength. It came with its fair share of challenges and it’s important to acknowledge that gender disparities persist in certain industries. As women with limited technical backgrounds, we faced challenges when dealing with certain contractors in the early stages of our venture. While some supported and helped us with our growth, others posed difficulties. We maintained positive relationships with our suppliers, and our interactions with certain contractors offered valuable insights and learning opportunities over the time.

Nada El Amrani

Founder of Matia Natural

Raising three Emirati daughters, I bear the responsibility to exhibit to my daughters, who represent the future generation of UAE, how to effectively balance the roles of a mother, a wife and an entrepreneur while also contributing positively to our community.

What do you love most about the UAE?

The UAE exemplifies numerous commendable qualities, which I personally value and consider a model to follow in my personal and professional life, such as the spirit of giving and its humanitarian endeavours. The UAE prides itself on fostering tolerance and harmony among various nationalities and the country’s leadership inspires everyone to achieve great things with their relentless pursuit of excellence and progress. Additionally, the UAE promotes gender inclusivity by the presence of women in diverse professional domains, and continually supports their contributions to the advancement of this exceptional nation.

This year, Emirati woman’s day coincides with the year of sustainability in the UAE and COP28 will also take place in the UAE this November to address matters related to climate changes. I think now is an opportune moment to join hands and work towards making the UAE a global leader in sustainability.  I believe it is important to be mindful and conscious about our purchasing decisions in a way that prioritises the protection of our well-being, the environment, and the welfare of future generations.  We must utilise our creativity and ingenuity to foster locally produced goods in a sustainable manner to ensure the future prosperity of this great nation.

Which Emirati women inspire you?

Her highness Sheikha Fatma bint Mubarak, mother of the nation, is a huge inspiration for me. Besides her big heart and soul, along with being a humanitarian figure, Her Highness has played a supportive and motivating role for all women in the UAE.  Recognising the importance of education for women, she emphasises its necessity in fostering societal development and progress. She firmly believes that women’s empowerment and their active participation in various professional fields are vital for achieving a sustainable society.

The concept of establishing Matia Natural, a locally made skincare brand that is both socially and environmentally conscious, presents an opportunity for women to contribute to the self-sustainable economy in the UAE by promoting local manufacturing and fostering innovation. Matia Natural has made it achievable and viable to initiate a business from ground up, based solely on an idea, as long as there is passion, knowledge and altruistic intentions to serve the community and uphold ethical values.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I anticipate seeing a greater number of successful and accomplished Emirati women entrepreneurs defying challenges, innovating, breaking records, and inspiring not just their fellow Emirati citizens but also women worldwide. We will continue to see governmental support to women achievers and local brands, as we have witnessed with Ether, a subsidiary of the Aldar government company. They offer space and complete services in Yas Mall so up-and-coming UAE brands can showcase their goods inside UAE, giving them the opportunity also to go overseas in the near future.

Your skincare brand Matia Natural takes a planet-friendly approach. How are you motivated by the UAE’s commitment to sustainability?

The success model of UAE has always served as a source of inspiration to Matia Natural.  This includes incorporating cultural diversity in our products, striving for excellence by carefully selecting high quality and ethically sourced raw ingredients for our formulation, and promoting transparency by providing accurate information to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions, ultimately leading to reduced waste on the planet. Achieving sustainability is a gradual process and a long-term objective and commitment of ours. Matia Natural is dedicated to making all the required adjustments in alignment with the brand’s journey and in support of the UAE’s vision for sustainability.
