Virginie Viard was inspired by artist-poet Jean Cocteau - a close personal friend of Gabrielle Chanel - and his 1959 film Le Testament d’Orphée for the mainly black-and-white Chanel cruise 2021/22 collection. In the show notes from the presentation, Viard explained the colour palette, saying “the precision and the poetry of Cocteau’s film made me want to create a very clean collection with a very distinct two-tone, made up of bright white and deep black.” The punk palette may be every rock chick's dream but colour-lovers are not forgotten; pink pastel tweed and lilac feathers complement the collection, adding delicate pops of femininity throughout.
