Designer Focus: Amal Al Mulla

Amal Al Mulla’s new-age romanticism stems from the designer’s refined aesthetic, creating trendy yet classically feminine separates that celebrate the beauty of women. We get to know the young designer and the design process behind her delicate interpretation of nature’s complexity in her spring/summer 2016 collection called Spring Awakening.

Using nature and its complexity as her inspiration

“I was inspired by the infinite romance and lightness that exists within nature’s ways. The way a new season approaches, the way spring awakens after fall, the way the light shows up after dark and all the beauty that it carries through, to feel the night for dawn to approach, to feel the cold for the warmth of spring to approach. With the idea being parallel to our woman herself, her complexity and grace balanced and connected, is what awakens her own significance and with that discovery, we created an array of pieces that would help empower and celebrate her individuality, her chaos, her beauty and warmth all in one.”

The importance of organza and silk in the spring collection

“One of our brand’s main aesthetics is the element of contrast, therefore in all collections, past and present, there will always be a play between femininity vs. masculinity and softness vs. texture and light vs. dark. I choose fabrics that resonate with our concept in mind for the brand itself and every collection we come up with is extremely important to tell the right story. For our spring/summer 2016, we brought back the use of dainty floral laces, and our utmost favourite organza fabric, which are contrasted against rougher textures such as canvas and stonewashed silks. We wanted to bring forth the idea of the collection and the feel of it as it is so important. We do that through the fabrics we choose and design with that helps in completely embodying the feeling we are trying to portray first and foremost.”

Our woman is confident, beautiful, strong, sensitive, perfect and imperfect all together.

Celebrating the individuality of women

“Every collection we come up with aims at women who celebrate their individuality and all that they are with a piece, rather than through a piece. It’s more about the way she feels and who she is rather than an age and what she does. Our woman is confident, beautiful, strong, sensitive, perfect and imperfect all together. Our designs are not meant to fill any gaps, but are worn to celebrate how beautiful and great a woman can be by being herself”.
