Every winter, Loewe launches a capsule collection to honour arts and crafts creatives. This year its the turn of British ceramicist William De Morgan: a renowned tile designer and potter.
Inspired by the fantasia creatures and floral arabesques in De Morgan’s drawings, the collection features standout ready-to-wear pieces and accessories for both men and women.
From a peacock-print trenchcoat to leather jacket with a dodo painted on the back and an otter-shaped handbag, the capsule combines De Morgan’s imaginative designs with Loewe’s longstanding mastery of craft to create a festive collection unlike any other.
In an explosion of print and textiles, oversized knitwear is decorated with detailed hand-stitching that resembles blown-up tiles, rabbits and partridges are collaged over foliage and then placed on linen shoppers and bucket bags, hoopoe birds hang from skirts and woollen dragon’s tails fall from behind.
Some garments are subtler; classic evening dresses sprawled in ceramic style engravings, bell sleeves with frayed edges billowing out from them and a ruffled clown -like collar in crimson.
‘Each year we have tackled different Arts and Crafts heroes of mine,’ said Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson. ‘For me it was a very natural process to do William De Morgan, he was a big collaborator in the arts and crafts movement and a true fantasist in that moment.’
The seasonal capsule blends magic with the everyday, in a quirk-filled range that is going straight to the top of our Christmas wishlist.
