THE DARK ARTS

The Margiela way

Celebrating all things frightfully exhilarating in fashion this week, we look to the dark recesses of designer minds.

The SS09 collection that celebrated the 20th anniversary of Maison Margiela (before Galliano stepped in) was a commentary on fashion at that moment, from the models' blanked faces, which represented the multitude of faceless beauties on the catwalks, to the cascades of hair appearing across slashed jackets mimicking the overbearing surge of tassels that were a major trend of the time. Commentaries aside, Margiela’s slightly askew approach to fashion is what will always be part of the brand DNA: Models with stockings across their faces, red lipstick and face wigs are all a celebrated part of the Margiela fan base.
