Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fall 2016 showcase will feature exceptional silhouettes, techniques and trends

The celebration of fashion as art continues in New York with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibit ‘Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion’.

The display will run from November 2016 to February 2017 and will showcase 60 silhouettes, techniques, trends and materials from the 18th century to present day. Each piece will be accompanied by an in-depth explanation of its significance and displayed in packing crates, as though they have just arrived at the Met.

“Our mission is to present fashion as a living art that interprets history, becomes part of the historical process, and inspires subsequent art,” said the Costume Institute’s curator in charge Andrew Bolton. “Over the seven decades since the Costume Institute became part of The Met in 1946, our collecting strategy has shifted from creating a collection of Western high fashion that is encyclopedic in breadth to one focused on acquiring a body of masterworks.”

Earlier this year, the Costume Institute put Haute Couture craftsmanship on a pedestal with its ‘Manus x Machina’ exhibition, which explores the instrumental relationship between fashion and technology.
