Primary colours meet pared-back minimalism, in a collection of reworked classics

From Micheal Kors to Balmain and Self-Portrait, so far the autumn/winter 2020 catwalks have embraced the the theme of equestrian — with horse riding-inspired boots and hats paired with bougie tailoring and blanket coats. But for Hermès, a French heritage house with long-standing equestrian story, the reference was subtle and far more functional.

Creative director Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski chose to reveal a pared-back collection that reinvented house codes into graphic designs. Working with a neutral palette that was offset by bold primary colour, there were polo shirts dresses, colour-block sweaters resembling jockey silks and capes that were made for the stables.

The set comprised of white vertical bars flecked with red, blue, green and yellow — show-jumping poles that when paired with the collection created an abstract style grid painting worthy of Piet Mondrian.

Created in luxurious fabrics like signature Hermès leather, shearling and superfine knit, the clothes took on a functional form with double layer quilted coats, sturdy knee-high boots and canvas raincoats designed for the great outdoors. While exquisitely crafted tailoring shone throughout.

The accessories came in the form of hexagon shaped bags saturated with colour that livened up an all tan look, as colour-blocking and classicism combined once more.
