A New Season’s Night Dream: The Hermès Arceau Petite Lune

Sep 30, 2019 | 3 min read

Reimagined for 2019, Hermès Arceau Petite Lune watch now comes in a brightly coloured palette of alligator straps

As the world celebrates 50 years since man first walked on the moon, and just days after Hazzaa Al Mansoori became the first Emirati in space, it seems the world of watchmaking is particularly focused upon all things lunar.

So when it comes to thinking of time and space this season, the latest creation from Hermès is a beautiful way to contemplate your own very stylish existence with your feet firmly rooted on earth.

The Hermès Arceau family of watches was originally created by Henri d’Origny in 1978, and is known for three things: its asymmetrical lugs, its sloping dial, and its slanted Arabic numerals, which are supposed to communicate the speed of a galloping horse.

Reimagined for 2019, and the pure lines and elegant 38mm steel case of the Hermès Arceau Petite Lune watch now comes polished or set with 70 diamonds, and features a sparkling white dial sprinkled with pearl grey Arabic numerals.

Powered by the Manufacture Hermès H1837 self-winding movement complete with moon phase module, driving displays of the hours, minutes, date at 6 o’clock and moon phases between 10 and 11 o’clock, the mischievous-looking moon in question was designed by  Franco-German artist Édouard Baribeaud for the Hermès scarf named ‘Acte III, Scène I, la Clairière...’, and was inspired by Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Topped by a mirror-polished bezel or set with a row of diamonds, its round 38 mm case in mirror-polished steel with a sapphire crystal caseback is complemented by a brightly coloured palette of alligator straps secured by a pin buckle and crafted by the Hermès Horloger artisans, as are the case and dial.

A beautiful combination of fashion heritage and literary fantasy, with a smattering of celestial sparkle, we’re loving it to the moon and back…
