The third Dubai-based concept by Greek-South African restauranteur Natasha Sideris (after Tashas and Flamingo Room), Avli transports diners direct to the shores of Santorini with white-washed walls and relaxed friendly staff for whom no request is too big. Even the music is modern Greek, which simply adds to the already authentic vibe.
When it comes to the food menu, there are three distinct camps – mezedes (small sharing plate), mains and desserts. So far, so good. Comprising a huge selection of dips including fava, tzatziki, beetroot and taramosolata, as well as tuna tartare, roaster pepper carpaccio, crab salad and, of course, a traditional Greek salad of red onion, olives, capers, tomatoes, cucumber and feta, the mezedes list is extensive. Prices dictate around one order per person for starters, however these dishes are designed to be shared, so be sure to fill your boots.
Fish and meat dishes reign supreme when it comes to the mains – think lamb chops, grilled tuna steak and huge tiger prawns that come perfectly seasoned in lemon, oregano, paprika and olive oil – but there are plenty of options for vegetarians too. We recommend the aubergine mille-feuille, which is deliciously decadent.
If you’re looking for a spot to host a business meeting or just fancy enjoying a midweek lunch that you didn’t have to cook, the restaurant has also launched a brand new lunch menu designed to transport guests to the shores of the Athenian Riviera.
Available between 12-4pm and priced at just Dhs120, guests can choose from one mezede including watermelon & feta salad and fried calamari, as well as a hearty main dish. Highlights include the aubergine mille-feuille, chicken souvlaki and grilled sea bass. There’s also a zesty orange and filo tart served with vanilla ice cream for dessert to end the meal and satisfy any sweet teeth in the house.
Prices may err on the upper side, but thanks to its buzzy atmosphere, brilliant cuisine, extensive drinks list and fantastic customer service, an Avli experience is most definitely worth it.
