Haute Hangouts: Opa, Dubai

Oct 31, 2024 | 2 min read

Escape to Greece without leaving the city, thanks to Opa Dubai

Latticed ceilings strewn with cascading bougainvillaea, vines creeping up white-washed walls, cobbled pavements leading to charming tavernas. This is the essence of an evening in Greece and, since jetting away to the islands is easier said than done, Opa offers a slice of paradise in the heart of Dubai.

The aforementioned signatures of Grecian adventures greet guests as they arrive through a private elevator before being whisked away to a traditional-style restaurant. In the interest of tradition, there are smashed plates underfoot thanks to Opa’s plate-smashing activities (side note: don’t send your dinnerware tumbling - specially crafted smashable plates are provided to every table), and the restaurant’s interiors evoke traditional tavernas through a white-and-blue palette.

Opa’s menu takes time-honoured Greek favourites and elevates them for the restaurant’s luxury-seeking clientele. For instance, hearty lamb kleftiko is served delicately with olive jus and grilled courgettes, while the mousaka comprises artfully plated beef short-rib layered with spiced aubergine. Before tucking into mains, don’t miss the gooey, honey-coated kataifi feta, plump grilled octopus and - what else? - a selection of dips, best mopped up with oregano-sprinkled pita bread. End with the generous and devilishly decadent Opa sundae, which comes adorned with pistachio cream, baklava, Greek yogurt ice cream and crispy phyllo pastry.

Should the lights dim mid-meal, don’t be alarmed. Opa comes alive in the evenings, with performances kicking off around 8PM. Expect to take part in Zorba dances as they snake around the restaurant, picking up diners as it goes, and don’t hesitate to twirl the white cloths (handed out upon arrival) with enthusiasm along to the beat.

Opa’s marriage of entertainment and elevated cuisine alongside a dedication to authenticity sets it apart from other eateries and ensures guests will have a (plate) smashing time, whether visiting with groups big or small. Book now
