Those unfamiliar with Dubai's thrilling dining scene can be forgiven for thinking it is all white tablecloths and over-the-top experiences. Yes, there are record-breakers, underwater fine-dining restaurants and sky-high venues, but there are also a wealth of hidden gems serving up some of the city's best cuisine. Honeycomb Hi-Fi takes the 'hidden' element literally as it is tucked away behind a secret door in a discreet (and fully functional) record store. Once inside, you'll find a buzzing space packed with audiophiles and foodies alike.

Honeycomb Hi-Fi is divided into three spaces: The Listening Room, which is the main dining area complete with a bustling bar; The Gallery, a more intimate section that doubles as an exhibition space; and The Garden, a terrace reminiscent of Japan's Bamboo gardens that is the place to be during cooler months. Although divided into three, the interiors portray a cohesive message: Honeycomb Hi-Fi is serious about music. The space has been designed to create optimal acoustics with foam-covered ceilings and features vinyl records dotted throughout as well as bespoke Ojas speakers at the heart of the venue. Every week a roster of the region's beloved DJs take to the decks to spin everything from '70s jazz and Afro to soul and deep house. Would you expect anything less from the region's first Listening Bar?

The dining concept at Honeycomb Hi-Fi is inspired by traditional izakayas which are casual Japanese eateries popular with the after-work crowd. The sharing-style menu utilises Japanese ingredients and cooking techniques across cold and hot starters, grilled skewers and larger rice and noodle dishes. We suggest unwinding with an innovative cocktail while starting with tai sea bream sashimi, mochi stuffed wings, seaweed sunomono salad and moreish chicken karaage.

There are an array of skewers from the binchotan grill up for grabs which are a staple in Japan's izakayas. There is one skewer per portion, so MOJEH suggests ordering plenty if you're a large party; duck breast with yuzu honey, wagyu rib eye and okra with fermented tomato are guaranteed crowd-pleasers. Hungry for more? Order the garlic prawn udon for mains before finishing with the black sesame cheesecake and a digestif.

So, who should visit Honeycomb Hi-fi? Anyone searching for great food; an unpretentious atmosphere; and new songs to add to their playlists. Pullman Hotel, Business Bay, Dubai. Book now
