We get to know the award-winning British interior designer as she celebrates the launch of her latest design project in Mauritius.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

My design philosophy has always been to create timeless and understated elegance, whilst also fusing the eastern principles of simplicity with the western taste for sumptuous textures and luxurious finishes. I always start with my neutral base, and I build on that, however, I do love to complement my calming and neutral palette with great accents of colour which transform a room.

What design projects have you been working on lately?

One of my latest projects was the LUX* Grand Gaube in Mauritius, where I was fortunate enough to be working alongside the Mauritian architect Jean-Francois Adam. It was such an amazing and inspiring experience. The refurbishment of this 186-bedroom key resort, which reopens this month, included everything from the incredible over-water villas and suites to the Palm Court restaurant, which stylistically referenced all of my favourite holidays - in places such as Cape Town and Mallorca. There are lots of great touches, such as a London barbershop and illustrations from French-street artist Jace dotted around the resort - I can’t wait to find out what the first guests think.

What are some of your career highlights?

I have had some incredible moments in my career, but the proudest so far has been receiving an MBE from the Queen in 2009 for services to interior design.

Which room in your own home is your favourite and why?

I love the whole house, but I have to admit I really adore the open plan living area. It has always been my absolute dream to find a big open space like this and let me tell you it’s not easy in London!

Do you have a favourite project that you have worked on?

I have just finished designing my new home in London, which is always one of the most exciting, but also the most stressful projects to work on, as you suddenly start seeing things through the eyes of a client. The new look is a real departure from what I have done so far and it’s really incredible to be able to live in the finished product. Each new project also captivates me entirely, so, at the moment, it would be working at the LUX* Grand Gaube in Mauritius, somewhere with such incredible energy and romance. I’ve fallen in love with the old school glamour of the hotel and its surroundings!

What is your biggest luxury?

My biggest luxury is definitely time – I never have enough of it! This is something that I want to change as my family is incredibly important to me.

How would you describe your personal style?

I would say that my style is classically tailored but with an edge. So, in terms of designers, I’m very eclectic, I love  Givenchy, Chanel and Stella McCartney mixed with Frame Jeans and maybe a bit of Balenciaga and Celine. I also love to offset these with high street brands, in the same way I mix textures.

What is your beauty and skincare routine?

I love natural skin care products and am a huge fan of Linda Meredith’s Oxygen facial and skin care.

Where are your favourite places to travel to?

I love Mauritius and go there as much as I can, especially now that I have a go-to hotel! My latest discovery is Mykonos and I also find Goa stunning. I am such a globetrotter though it’s hard just to pick a few places, but Ibiza, and Asia, particularly Vietnam, are definitely high up on my list.

What do you do to relax?

I work out every morning as it helps to set me up for the day. I work best in a more directed and focused way, so I keep the weekends for relaxing with my family.
