"Over the past five years, the art landscape in our region has experienced rapid evolution," notes Maliha Tabari of Tabari Artspace. This evolution is marked by the arrival of key figures from Art Basel, the anticipation of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and the presence of Sotheby’s in Saudi Arabia, all enriching an already vibrant ecosystem. These developments, coupled with initiatives like golden visas for creatives and government-supported studio spaces, are fostering an environment ripe for artistic innovation.
"Events like Art Dubai have consistently served as international touchpoints," Tabari continues, emphasising the crucial role these platforms play in connecting the UAE to a global audience. Aisha Alabbar of Aisha Alabbar Gallery echoes this sentiment, stating that Art Dubai "brings international visibility, fosters cross-cultural exchange, and strengthens the local market by attracting global collectors, curators and institutions." These events are not merely commercial ventures; they are vital catalysts for cultural dialogue and exchange.
The galleries themselves are playing a pivotal role in shaping this landscape. "Being based in the UAE, a country with a rapidly evolving cultural landscape, it is essential for us to support and amplify the voices of artists from the region while fostering a dialogue with global perspectives," explains Celine Azem of Firetti Contemporary. This commitment to balancing international and regional talent is a hallmark of the UAE's art scene. As Tabari points out, artists are "invariably influenced by their contexts," reinterpreting cultural heritage through contemporary lenses and cross-cultural influences.
The role of female gallerists is particularly noteworthy. "Women have been leading the art world in the Gulf for decades, from institutions to galleries and art fairs," Tabari asserts. Aisha Alabbar adds that "as an Emirati female-led gallery, we focus on diverse and underrepresented voices, promoting a more inclusive art world." Their perspectives bring a unique dimension, fostering a space where female artists, particularly Emirati artists, are encouraged to share their journeys and talents.
Looking ahead, the future of the region’s art scene appears bright. "We anticipate increased international attention and the presence of more international galleries and fairs," Tabari predicts. Azem foresees "a continued expansion of institutional and critical support for contemporary artists" and the integration of digital art and AI-driven practices.
