Playful patterns dance across the canvas carrying the weight of serious subjects

At Sevil Dolmaci’s latest exhibition, Playground, art enthusiasts find an opportunity to celebrate the vision of contemporary Turkish artists in a curation that marries childlike wonder with the harsher realities of everyday life. With artists like Pinar Birim, known for her depiction of Istanbul's chaos and cacophony through vibrant colours, and Melisa Mızraklı, who focuses her creativity on the photography of human forms, the exhibition guarantees a captivating experience that brings together different forms of artistic expressions on to one platform.

A thread of playfulness ties the artworks together, whether it is the floral and geometric elements in pieces like Ekrem Yalçındağ’s Turquoise or the pop-art depiction in others (namely Gençay Aytekin’s Doodles). Serious subjects are treated lightly without losing their depth, allowing viewers a moment to contemplate without distress, but keeping the message at the forefront.

On the other hand, acrylic paintings including those by Cem Gönül urge the viewer to embrace their playful spirit through almost cartoonish visuals. Balancing the serious with the playful, Playground is an interesting artistic endeavour.
