Kick off the year with a week of thought-provoking conversations that will not only stimulate your mind but also transport you to worlds beyond your imagination, fictitious or otherwise. Returning for its 17th edition, the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature brings together a stellar lineup featuring some of the world's most celebrated authors alongside exciting new voices from the region. Whether you're eager to introduce your children to the world of Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or captivated by the magic of poetry under the stars, the festival promises an unforgettable experience.
For The Avid Reader
From acclaimed author Abraham Verghese, known for The Covenant of Water, to two-time Booker Prize-shortlisted novelist Chigozie Obioma, this year's Emirates LitFest offers a unique opportunity to delve into the worlds created by some of the finest literary minds. Through engaging discussions, authors, archaeologists and journalists will share insights into their latest works, offering readers a deeper understanding of the themes, settings and inspirations that lie beneath the surface of the written word. These hour-long sessions are spread out across the week.
For The Culinary Enthusiast
Palestinian chef and hotelier Fadi Kattan will be part of this year's After Hours section, discussing his book, Bethlehem: A Celebration of Palestinian Cuisine and Culture. Kattan's cookbook takes readers on a culinary journey through the heart of Bethlehem, featuring conversations with local farmers and a collection of his curated recipes.
For young chefs, Darryl Gadzekpo and Ella Phillips, authors of the children's cookbook From Plant to Plate, will lead an exciting session as part of the festival's family-friendly offerings. This interactive workshop will introduce children to the wonders of gardening, guiding them on how to select the right soil and plant their own seeds. By sharing their passion for healthy and sustainable eating, the authors create a space where children can learn about the joys of growing and enjoying homegrown produce.
For The Poetry Lover
If spoken word is more your thing, make your way to Caravanserai Desert Camp, where Desert Stanzas will be held on 30 January. Set against the backdrop of majestic dunes and a starlit sky, this is an unmissable event if a night of poetry is your dream come true. With a lineup of both regional and international talents, it is without doubt one the highlights of this year’s edition.
