In a post-lockdown world, social distancing, fogging machines and safety ambassadors are the new normal, and just some of the many precautionary measures in place for Dubai cinemas re-opening. Following the recent ruling by Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management, cinemas are able re-raise the curtain and open their doors from May 27, but watching a film at your local mall will be a new experience entirely.

As well as your usual side of popcorn, a trip to the cinema in Dubai now comes with strict guidelines that ensure both guests and employees are comfortable and most importantly, safe. Face masks will be mandatory and gloves optional, contactless payment is recommended, with online booking encouraged to guarantee a socially distanced seat due to the new reduced cinema capacities.

Vox Cinemas are using fogging machines to disinfect auditoriums before and after viewings, surfaces will be continually sanitised and staff — who will maintain regular temperature checks and wear masks and gloves at all times — will guide guests on where to sit, keeping up with physical distancing practices. Touch screen kiosks will be closed and guests are advised to book in advance and pre-arrange food pick ups via the website or app, in order to reduce contact and queues.

At Reel Cinemas, there will be at least two metres between each group within the theatre (the largest group being a family of four).Bring along your ID if necessary, as Children under 12 and adults over 60 will not be permitted and be prepared for a temperature check upon arrival, touchless hand sanitisers distributed throughout the cinema and disposable cutlery for your movie snacks.Novo Cinemas are also opening from today, with set seat allocations and safety protocols in order.

Feeling overwhelmed by the new rules? Fear not, there will be signs detailing the necessary steps dotted throughout each cinema, as well as staff to help guide you into the new experience. And if you’re not ready for cinemas re-opening, Dubai’s updated 11pm curfew means Vox’s recently launched drive-in cinema concept is also ready to return — so you can enjoy the latest flicks from the comfort of your car, Grease style. Purchase tickets online at Vox, Novo and Reel cinemas.
