Beauty Focus: The Top Knot

Last week's Met Gala turned out some incredible fashion and beauty looks that are sure to influence the way we approach red carpet and event dressing this year. Today we turn our focus to the trusty top knot which proved to be a serious hairstyle contender when it comes to event dressing. Here we share our four favourites from the evening.

Tap into geisha-style elegance with a double-faceted top knot. Start by tying hair into a high ponytail. Divide the ponytail in half and wrap one half around the handle of a hairbrush to create a high loop. Use the second half of the ponytail to wrap around the base of the loop and secure with hair pins and a firm hold spray.

Try a deconstructed top knot for a softer look. Comb hair back loosely into a high ponytail and pull out a partition of hair at the front. Secure ponytail into a messy top knot and use a straightening iron to add a slight kink to the loose hair at the front.

For a look that's both modern and elegant opt for a sleeker finish. Start by running styling cream through damp hair before blowdrying. Run over with a straightening iron and brush up into a ponytail. Smooth the sides with a lightweight gel and then loop and tuck the hair up before securing with pins at the base. Finish with a hairband or mini veil.

To make more of a statement look to Rihanna's voluminous top knot, tie a ponytail at the very top of the head and neatly wrap the hair around it. This looks works especially well with hairstyles cut with a front or side fringe.
