Prep your beauty bag for winter with make-up and hair tips from the pros
Time To Brows
Good eyebrows are always the order of the day, and with a little help from the experts, your brow game can be stronger than ever. Chloe Walsh, brow artist and co-owner of Browns & Co, explains "The brow lamination treatment is the best way to get your brows to stay full and in place all day and night. The treatment lifts the hairs into the preferred position, and creates a beautifully natural or dramatic (as you wish) fluffy brow. For those with finer eyebrow hair, Walsh says, "The nano-blading treatment is great to fill in any gaps if your natural hair isn't growing. The treatment lasts around nine-12 months, depending on skin type, but this treatment is perfect for making fuller-looking brows without having to fill them in every day!" If you prefer 'doing' your eyebrows yourself, Walsh recommends this must-try beauty hack: "A little trick is to get a bar of soap (Pears soap is best for this), get a mascara brush, work it into the soap with a little bit of toner, and brush the hairs up with the soap – your brows will stay in place all night long!”
Eye Like It
One of the most effective ways to wake up tired eyes and get glam in an instant is with a bit of glitter. To perfect this look, make sure you follow three important steps in this order: firstly, apply foundation to your eye, as this acts as the best base for your eyeshadow; next, apply your eyeshadow to the lid (only); and finally, pepper your lid with either gold or silver sparkles. We like to create this look with a side of matte lip – especially for the day.
Swept Away
We all want high, striking cheekbones, and with a bit of blending here and a touch of highlighter there, Bella Hadid cheekbones are available to us all. Make sure you have an even base to start with, and then get contouring. Choose a shade that is slightly darker than your skin, apply just under your cheekbone and buff until blended. You can now apply your liquid, stick or powder blush from the apples of your cheeks out towards the middle of your ears. Dust some highlighter just above the cheekbones, on the outer parts of your eyes, and voilà – a sculptured face in no time.
Hair Today
Winter or summer, blondes have to look after their tresses that much more than their brunette counterparts. Reem Abou Samra, founder and owner of LALOGE Beauty Lounge, explains: "Blonde hair requires a lot more upkeep than darker shades. However, there's a number of measures that can be taken to ensure the colour and condition stays perfect for as long as possible. Blonde hair has a tendency to go brassy quickly, especially when the sun and chlorine are brought into the mix, so using a special silver shampoo once a week will neutralise the yellowy tones and add shine. Blonde hair tends to look dull quickly, so deep-conditioning masks are vital to lock in hydration and maintain tip-top condition. As the bleaching process can be harsh on the hair, it ’s always best to look at prevention, rather than cure. Protect the hair with serums and heat-protecting sprays before styling with hot irons or other styling tools, and use leave-in conditioning sprays while at the pool or beach."
Lip Service
Winter is the best time of the year to introduce dark lip colours to your beauty routine. Warm reds, oranges and burgundy work best in matte. To get the most out of your lipstick, Dubai-based international make-up artist Manuel Losada says "For an easy lipstick application, make sure your lips are soft and smooth. you can exfoliate your lips with any sugar scrub, and use a very hydrating lip balm before applying your lipstick." Lipstick-lovers face so many trends (matte, glossy, nude), season after season, and Losada is a fan of them all: "I love different textures and finishes when it comes to lipsticks. I like how glossy lipsticks bring light to lips, but on the other hand there is something very sophisticated yet modern to see different colours of lipstick in matte finish, and also the long-wear properties that a matte-finish lipstick has. My tip is to make sure you choose a matte moisturising formula to avoid your lips from losing their moisture throughout the day. For AW21, my favourites are nude peach, rose and deep vamp reds. I always like to give lipsticks a little edge, so apply them with the help of your fingers, leaving the edges soft and modern. If the look you are going for is more polished, apply it straight from the bullet – the finish will be more defined and perfected."
