The Duchess of Sussex isn't afraid to push the envelope with her style choices, especially when it comes to royal protocol.

Meghan Markle surprised the crowd when she made an unannounced appearance at The Fashion Awards 2018 in London on Monday evening. The Duchess was on hand to present her good friend and the artistic director of Givenchy, Clare Waight Keller, with the award for British Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Everyone was so busy obsessing over how stunning the Duchess looked in her one-shoulder Givenchy gown, that it took a minute to notice her other major style statement of the evening: dark nail polish.

While the inky hue was a sophisticated and winter-appropriate choice, it’s unusual for royal women to wear such a dark shade, as there has long been an unspoken royal rule that women should only wear clear or neutral shades of nail polish.

The reason? Well, rumour has it that Queen Elizabeth prefers it that way because she finds colourful nail polish “vulgar”. Her majesty herself has been wearing Essie’s Ballet Slippers for decades.

Although there has yet to be an official confirmation, we are pretty sure Markle’s shade of choice was CND Shellac’s Dark Dahlia and we wholeheartedly approve of the hue, because sometimes rules are made to be broken.
