Hair and makeup were fearless on the Autumn/Winter 2021 runways, even with a global pandemic dominating headlines. Here is your beauty breakdown.

Draw The Line

From Dior to Dolce & Gabbana, bold liner brought a sense of drama to the runway. The bolder, the better, for a look that can translate to the street even with masks and social distancing.

Read My Lips

Whether hidden by a mask or not, the lip is here to stay for Autumn/Winter 2021. At Dolce & Gabbana, deep shades ruled the runway in every colour of the rainbow. Moschino embraced rouge and vivid pinks, whilst at Valentino, a classic red was anything but boring. Three ways to make your lipstick last are: investing in a lightweight matte formula, as cream and glossy smudge more easily; apply a lip pencil underneath your lipstick to enhance the colour and stop any bleeding; and blot off any excess product with a tissue or fix it with a translucent setting powder.

Return To Renaissance

Romantic and royal are the keywords for this beauty revival. Inspired by the high society of the past, hair should be coiffed, and cheeks flushed with a puff of pink or berry blush. Take notes from Simone Rocha, Viktor & Rolf, and Vivienne Westwood. Tiara, optional.

A Cut Above The Rest

It’s time to brave short hair and opt for the chop. Wear above the shoulder, blunt and with a middle parting for a modern take on the trend.

90s Nostalgia

It’s time to reminisce as the era of choppy hair, and tawny makeup palettes return. The vibe? Effortless. Think smoked out eyes, nude or brown lips and the return of the shaggy cut.

Fringing The Subject

Put down those scissors. This is a trend that requires a professional. Bangs are back in all lengths, textures, and colours. From high maintenance micro chops to eyelid sweeping just got out of bed vibes, there’s a look to suit every mood.

Back To The Future

With so much uncertainty ahead, sci-fi inspired looks offered a feeling of familiarity this season. Not launching us too far into the future, the beauty was more of a nod to Barbarella. Touches of silver were spotted from Giambattista Valli to Salvatore Ferragamo whilst Givenchy stole the show with a statement monochromatic eye look.

Clean Sweep

Even with so many statement looks this season, the real showstopper was skin. Makeup artists reached for lightweight formulas to highlight models own complexions. The result? A flawless, healthy and glowing confidence.

Next-Level Nude

The modern manicure calls for a nude nail. Elevate the look with a sleek silhouette from stiletto to squoval and add a touch of nail art. Look to Simone Rocha and Zimmermann for inspiration you can recreate at home.

Rainbow Reveller

Get your makeup palettes at the ready as your face becomes the ultimate canvas. There was no shying away from colour on the catwalk, with makeup artist Pat McGrath’s electric blue and hot pink winged eyes at Versace drawing in the spotlight. Giambattista Valli levelled up the trend with watercolour hues swept all around the eye. A flush of bright fuchsia was swept across the cheeks and up to the temples at Molly Goddard, taking it one step further.

Pony Up

Braids, ponytails, and a fusion of the two turned heads from front to back. From freestyling with the models’ natural locks to prep and precision, the only rule for Autumn/Winter 2021? Length! Begin by adding 60s style braids to frame your face and leave your natural hair loose, as seen at Etro. Then, for a sleek pony look to Elisabetta Franchi, where hair was pulled back low, with a braid woven in.

Smoke Show

The classic smoky eye marks its return with a slightly grungier feel. Sweep shadow along the upper and lower lids, smudging it into a worn like look.

Brow Game

Just like last season, brows were kept natural. Brush them up for a slightly unruly feel before reaching for the gel and brow freeze to set the look.
