Whether you’re dripping in fake blood or donning products that transformed you into your favourite celebrity, it can be a serious struggle to remove Halloween makeup. But rather than going to bed with a full face of product and risking breakouts and blocked pores, here’s some tips on how to wash off those spooky looks without harsh rubbing and overly strong products which can cause your skin to freak out.

Know which type of cleanser to use
The key to removing heavy Halloween makeup quickly is knowing which type of cleanser to use for which makeup. If you’re wearing waterproof paints and using anything stronger than eyelash glue, use an oil-based cleanser. Similarly, baby oil and coconut oil can be used to cleanse off water-based paint.

Make sure you double cleanse
After using an oil-based cleanser it’s important to follow up with a foaming or gel based product, which will ensure you’ve removed every last trace of makeup. If you can’t be bothered double cleansing, you should at the very least soak a cotton pad with micellar water and swipe it over your face a few times.

Use a washcloth
The best (and gentlest) way to give your skin some physical exfoliation is by removing your cleanser with a warm washcloth. The texture helps to buff out and lift up any residue that’s lingering on the skin better than your bare fingers will.

Get creative
If your Halloween makeup involved the use of facial glitter, there’s a good chance not even double cleansing will remove it all. Instead of spending hours in the bathroom trying to remove every little piece individually, try using Scotch tape or a lint roller to tackle it. This will also save you from scrubbing your face raw.

Finish with a good moisturiser or facial oil
Last but not least, make sure you apply a nourishing moisturiser or facial oil. Jojoba oil is great because it’s nourishing and gentle on all skin types. It also doesn’t contain any retinols or exfoliating ingredients, which you’ll want to avoid after stressing out your skin with hours of face paint and costume makeup.
