Dr. Barbara Sturm

If you’re a skincare junkie then Dr. Barbara Sturm should need no introduction. Her coveted Molecular Cosmetics skincare line is a best-seller and with a roster of A-list clients that includes Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham and the Hadid sisters, the orthopedic and aesthetic doctor has made a name for herself as one of the best in business. While on a recent trip to Dubai she shared her skincare rules to live by. Take note, or regret it forever.

INVEST IN YOUR SKINCARE
“It’s important to invest in your products. Better to have one or two products with really high-quality, high-doseage ingredients than 100 not-so-great ones.”

HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
“Hydration is the number one thing you have to pay attention to in your skincare regime, because if your skin is dehydrated, you’ll have problems ranging from breakouts and redness, to irritation and flakiness. Think of your skin cells as grapes. When they are juicy and hydrated, they’re in good shape. When they’re dry and dehydrated and in need of some love, they’ll look like raisins. Drink lots of water, and moisturise a lot.”

EAT SMART
“Everything you eat shows in your skin, and an anti-inflammatory diet will work wonders for your skin and your body. Don’t eat fried food, processed meat, sugary foods or drink soda. Instead, eat anti-inflammatory foods like mackerel, salmon, cherries, oranges, walnuts and almonds, all of which have great anti-inflammatory properties.”

EAT, SLEEP, REST, REPEAT
“Jennifer Lopez has an insanely busy schedule, but she still looks incredible. Why? Because she focuses all her stress positively, by taking any negative stress and trying to channel it in a positive way, exercises every day, and goes to bed early at night. Sleep is really important for your skin. Never under-estimate the beauty benefits of getting eight hours of great sleep as many nights of the week as you can.”

ACID PEELS ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND
“There’s a current trend for using acid peels, but they are really damaging to the skin’s barrier function. When your skin’s barrier function is not in tact, especially somewhere like the Middle East, with such intense sun, you risk a heightened chance of premature ageing, hyper-pigmentation and skin cancer. Stop with the aggression. Be nice to your skin.”
