Here, Newby discusses summer’s beauty must-haves from sunscreens and frizz-fighting creams to in-flight essentials you need in your carry-on.
How can we adapt our beauty routines to summer temperatures?
It’s important to pay attention to what your skin needs seasonally as colder and warmer months require very different routines to maintain optimum skin health. Temperature and humidity levels play a huge part in this, and so during and in the lead up to summer you’ll naturally require more lightweight creams or lotions and cleansers to help keep your complexion hydrated and calm. Regular hydration masks are a must, such as the 111Skin Molecular Hydration Mask two to three times a week, sometimes layered with an additional hyaluronic acid serum. And take your SPF to a whole new level by applying factor 50 consistently throughout the day – Dr Dennis Gross has some excellent lightweight formulas that also work well under makeup.
Which beauty trends do you think we’ll be leaving behind as we transition into summer?
Anything too intense, such as loaded-up lashes, graphic liners and heavy lipsticks. Summer is all about dewy complexions, peachy tones and effortless glossy hair – and for this summer specifically the prettiest light summer glitter.
What are the key beauty trends for the season ahead?
‘Status Skin’ is a huge ongoing trend. With more women looking to their skincare rather than relying on foundation to achieve that glowy, dewy, healthy-looking skin, so the focus has shifted towards highly efficient products and devices to achieve the very best complexion, reducing the need for full coverage foundations and heavy powders. Healthy skin is non-negotiable for the summer season!
‘Happy Hit of Colour’ is another key trend that’s all about embracing colour in an effortless and minimal way. Think cheerful shots of colour blended over bare skin, ideally with fingers, not a brush, or an easy dab of colour on the eyes, cheeks or lips – anything subtle for a fresh and healthy look.
Which new beauty brands on Net-a-Porter should we be shopping?
Expert brands such as newly launched QMS (Quality Medical Skincare) which was founded by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Erich Schulte and was one of the first ‘doctor brands’. The focus is on how to repair, rebalance and optimise skin health with targeted treatments and powerful ingredients. We also love Emma Lewisham, the world’s first carbon neutral beauty brand with a science-led and natural approach – products are nourishing and particularly great for skin with hyperpigmentation. For makeup Rose Inc is a key brand to note for its gorgeous, easy to wear makeup and focused skincare.
What are the in-flight beauty essentials we need to pack this summer?
Anything and everything to restore moisture – a good hyaluronic serum such as the exclusive Dr Nigma Talib x KIND.EST serum with marine collagen, a moisturising sheet mask from Joanna Vargas or 111Skin, and of course a high-quality moisturiser that will plump the skin with additional nutrients and brightening agents, such as Kat Birki’s Intensive Face Cream with Vitamin C.
What are your go-to sunscreens?
I love SuperGoop!’s Unseen Sunscreen, Ultra Violette’s Queen Screen Luminizing Skincreen and Dr Barbara Sturm’s Sun Drops. These are the brands that I know I can rely on for great protection and amazing textures.
How can we fight the frizz in high humidity?
Dry hair frizzes in humidity so really focus on nourishing your hair to get as much moisture into it, especially in the lengths and at the ends. Use a good frizz-combating shampoo and conditioner such as Olaplex No. 4 and No. 5. Oribe’s Anti-Humidity Spray and Virtue’s Correct The Polish Un-Frizz Cream are both excellent.
Technology is taking the beauty world by storm. What are your favourite devices?
I’m the biggest advocate for facial tech and absolutely love trying the latest tools and devices.
