Cannes: Feathers, Beads and Emeralds

The 68th Cannes Film Festival has begun and as stars took to the red carpet for the star-studded opening gala last night, we take a look at the breathtaking gowns celebrating the La Tete Haute premiere.

The midnight plunging gown with feathered bodice and dramatic beading could only have been crafted with Julianne Moore in mind. Never one to disappoint, the bold actress teamed the Armani Privé gown with emerald earrings – the go-to jewel for the opening event. This year marks Armani Privé’s 10th anniversary and with Moore’s iconic red locks swept into a slick up-do, the feathery couture gown was the centre of attention.

It seems Julianne Moore wasn’t the only actress who received the memo about feathers; Naomi Watts stepped onto the red carpet in one of the pieces from Elie Saab’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection, an abundance of pearls, sequins, embroidery and of-course feathers – bold choices seemed to prevail at this year’s event.

An indulger of vibrant colours, we were glad to see Lupita Nyong’o delve into her colourful wardrobe for her return to the red carpet. After long being absent from star-studded events, the actress made a dramatic entrance in an ethereal green dress decorated with soft crystals and silky blooms. The Gucci gown set the sartorial standard for the evening with jade and emerald tones emerging in Julianne Moore’s and Fan BingBing’s looks too.

Natalie Portman and her husband Benjamin Millepied were almost inseparable as they arrived at the iconic film festival; Natalie opted for an effortlessly stylish red Dior Couture to celebrate her directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, alongside a gently smoky eye and diamond earring. The look was faultlessly classic.

Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing is renowned for her ability to seamlessly adapt to extravagant designs, from her gold sequined Christopher Bu gown at the Met Gala to her Ralph & Russo couture design with jade embroidery and cape-train to last night’s La Tete Haute premier. Alongside the actress’ emerald jewellery and Louis Vuitton clutch, you can see why the fresh-faced beauty is fast becoming every designer’s dream.
